Why Sonic Boom Six means a lot to me.

People have always questioned me on my music taste, none of my close group of friends like the same kind of music as me so they don’t see the appeal in it and that doesn’t bother me in the slightest - each to their own - but I get asked why I like them so much that I figured I may as well write it down.

Sonic Boom Six are ALL about the music, they make that clear to their fans. This means that us as fans know that it’s not all about the money like it would be with some of these manufactured pop bands that start out saying it’s about the music but they just stick to the same tunes, same lyrics etc because they’re too scared to push their style for fear that their sales will drop. SB6 are constantly trying new things. You just have to listen to Floating Away and then What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Stronger. Or Piggy In The Middle then New Style Rocka. They’re different songs and even if you don’t pay attention you can TELL that they’re different songs. Too many times I’ve listen to some bands’ album and genuinely not noticed that the song has changed. I love how they try out new sounds and mix genres so much. I hate how you’re supposed to fit into one category of music. I like a lot of music, sure I like rock/punk/ska the best but I listen to pop punk and some chart music too. So when you listen to an SB6 song and you can hear rock, punk, ska and dubstep all at the same time - it’s amazing! Someone asked me to categorize them once and it was the most difficult thing I’ve ever been asked to do. It’s refreshing.

Also, the lyrics. They write songs about things that ACTUALLY MATTER. Police brutality, fighting against arranged marriages, bullying, anti-social behaviour and all the things that people SHOULD be paying attention to but tend to ignore. Their lyrics can relate to any mood that you’re in. If you’re angry, you turn it up and hear Barney rapping into your ear and there’s something about his voice and the passion in it that if you’re angry, it calms you, it makes you focus on that instead of the anger. Or if you’re happy, listening to him and Laila and being able to hear how well their voices work together. If you’ve lost all hope you can listen to songs like Shareena and Do It Today and not feel quite so alone in the world.

Basically, SB6 have helped me through some fucking hard times and they’ve also been the soundtrack to some fucking good times. Either way, I adore them and I wouldn’t be the person I am today with out them. Neither would I have some of the amazing friends that I have today without them. If I could do anything it would be to hug each of them and thank them for everything they’ve done for me without even knowing it.

So yeah, sure, go listen to your “Like a G6” or whatever but when you need some hope or a little happiness, I hope you can find it in lyrics such as “Now I’m feeling so fly like a G6” ‘cause I know that I couldn’t.
